After qualifying as an advocate and solicitor, Adlin Abdul Majid commenced her legal career in civil and commercial litigation, with emphasis on contractual disputes, debt recovery and banking litigation.
In 2002, she left legal practice to join the agency responsible for the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC Malaysia) initiative and the development of the information and communications technology (ICT) industry in Malaysia. During her tenure there, she was instrumental in developing the legal and regulatory framework for MSC Malaysia status and MSC Malaysia cybercity/cybercentre status. As head of the regulatory and legal compliance team, part of her responsibilities was to ensure companies complied with the conditions of status.
Adlin has advised the government on a wide range of ICT policies and initiatives, such as the liberalisation of the services sector (which included the ICT sector), and a project to develop an online dispute resolution mechanism in Malaysia. The scope of advisory work also extended to negotiations on ICT aspects of inter-governmental bi- and multi-lateral agreements, such as free trade agreements and agreements under the World Trade Organisation.
She also represented the government at regional and international levels in examining crucial issues related to ICT laws, including the harmonisation of the e-commerce legal infrastructure in the ASEAN region, and cybercrime enforcement. In line with government efforts to enhance skills and knowledge in ICT laws, particularly for enforcement officers, Adlin conducted several presentations and trainings in this area, for the benefit of those serving with the Royal Malaysia Police (better known as Polis Diraja Malaysia), as well as international senior police officers.
Adlin has also served on committees and taskforces at ministerial level, mainly in relation to the enactment, implementation and review of legislation such as the Promotion of Investments Act 1986 [Act 327], the Electronic Commerce Act 2006 [Act 658] and the Electronic Government Activities Act 2007 [Act 680].
She has advised on ICT consultancy agreements; agreements for the supply, installation and commissioning of hardware and software; and government incentive and funding agreements related to ICT projects. She has also advised on issues relating to the Competition Act 2010 [Act 712].
A graduate of the University of Oxford, Adlin joined Lee Hishammuddin Allen & Gledhill as a partner on 1 March 2011.
