My experience as A Pupil

“I am glad to say |
The legal industry can be daunting to any fresh-faced law student. There are many law firms out there with impressive track records, filled with men and women strutting around in power suits. Prior to entering the working world, it was common knowledge (or so I thought) that lawyers were highly strung people with little patience. Hence, I thank my lucky stars for the opportunity to undergo an attachment programme in 2008 at Lee Hishammuddin Allen & Gledhill (“LHAG”). I discovered that beneath their seemingly stern exteriors, the people were not only warm and friendly, they were also generous and genuine in imparting their knowledge to the younger ones. The wonderful experience throughout that month-long attachment helped me decide on LHAG as the firm where I wanted to do my pupillage. Six months on, I am glad to say that I have made the right decision. As a pupil in the firm, our position is a privileged one where we are guided every step of the way. Pupils get to try their hand at drafting various opinions and submissions. Sometimes, challenging tasks are also assigned to us — these opportunities should be appreciated as they encourage one to think critically and analytically. What better way to hone the skills required of a good lawyer than being under the watchful eyes of experienced partners and associates? True, there are times when it feels like a million things need to be done at once and you are racing against the clock to meet the deadline. However, help is always at hand in LHAG; all one has to do is ask. A pupil here is also exposed to the many different facets of being a lawyer. We attend meetings with clients and assist in public seminars on contemporary legal issues organised by the firm. In addition, LHAG practises a system whereby pupils are rotated between the corporate and litigation departments, thus exposing us to both types of work. Our confidence is also enhanced when we are sent out on various court duties, occasionally out of state, where we are required to handle matters independently, thereby improving our ability to think on our feet. I personally find these duties exciting, and it is one of the highlights of my pupillage in LHAG. The pupils of LHAG are another reason I look forward to coming to work every day as our relationship goes beyond being merely colleagues. Birthday celebrations and social gatherings are a norm, and we often assist each other in times of need without having second thoughts on going the extra mile for one another. This sense of camaraderie permeates throughout all layers of the firm and is a culture I find to be one of LHAG’s strongest assets. All in all, pupillage in LHAG has been truly rewarding. I certainly look forward to the annual trip this year, where I can let my hair down with my colleagues, the same people I am blessed enough to call my friends.
