Recognising Women’s Participation in the Workforce
In conjunction with International Women’s Day 2019 on 8 March, Lee Hishammuddin Allen & Gledhill organised an afternoon talk themed “Women in Law: Challenges & Perspectives”. Royal Patron and guest of honour, DYMM Tunku Ampuan Besar Negeri Sembilan Darul Khusus Tuanku Aishah Rohani binti Almarhum Tengku Besar Mahmud, officiated the event, which focused on the accomplishments and successes of women in the legal sphere. Also in attendance was DYTM Raja Puan Muda Kedah. This event was unique as it was conceptualised by S Saravana Kumar, a male partner, who is with the Tax, SST & Customs Practice.
The talk comprised a lively and engaging panel discussion which was introduced by partner Eunice Chan Wei Lynn and moderated by partner Ooi Bee Hong. The panellists consisted of former ambassador and social activist, Dato’ Noor Farida Mohd Ariffin; independent director of various PLCs, Dato’ Zuraidah binti Atan; Negri Sembilan Exco member Nicole Tan Lee Koon; and general counsel of AIA Berhad as well as director of the Ombudsman for Financial Services, Datin Veronica Selvanayagy.
More than 200 guests, comprising members of the legal fraternity and the media, attended the event held at the Hilton Kuala Lumpur.
The legal profession in Malaysia is made up of more women than men. In LHAG itself, almost half of its lawyers numbering more than 100 consist of women. Through this event, LHAG recognises the contributions of women to the workforce and society at large and reaffirms its commitment as a proponent of women in leadership, especially with respect to the legal fraternity.
